Ice sledging and iceboating

In extremely cold winters when the bodden freezes over and is safe to walk on, enthusiastic anglers can enjoy a traditional form of ice fishing which involves making noise with a wooden pole. The first step is to cut a hole in the ice and set a net under the surface with the help of two wooden poles. One pole is then used to make noise by repeatedly striking the ice from below. This startles the chilled and lethargic fish and causes them to swim into the net.

Winters an extended cold spell present an excellent opportunity for iceboating and ice sledging along the Baltic Sea coast.
