From garfish to ice fishing

The primary game fish in the brackish waters of the bodden are zander, pike, perch, whitefish and occasionally eel. These species are best caught from a boat because the reed belt that lines the edge of the bodden makes reaching the open water from shore difficult in most places. In the Baltic Sea, anglers can catch cod, herring, flounder, sea trout and garfish. Pier fishing is only permitted during the night from 10 pm to 6 am.

Recreational fishing is subject to official guidelines: In addition to a fishing license, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania requires anglers to have a fishing permit for coastal waters called Küstenkarte that is available as a day pass (6 EUR), weekly pass (12 EUR) and annual pass (30 EUR). Permits can be purchased at the angling shop listed below. If you do not have a fishing licence, you can buy a tourist fishing licence for 24 EUR at the Wustrow Tourism Information Centre (Kurverwaltung) or at the order enforcement office. The licence is valid for four weeks and is only available in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Furthermore, please note that there is an annual close season! Fishing is prohibited in the protected spawning grounds from 1 April to 31 May. Additional rules must be observed when boat fishing. Please visit the angling shop to inform yourself about local seasonal regulations.

In ice-cold winters when the bodden freezes over, enthusiastic anglers can enjoy ice fishing.
